The Institute of Directors has released the third annual Chapter Zero New Zealand Impact Report, reflecting on progress made in supporting directors to lead on climate governance and identifying opportunities to deepen that impact across Aotearoa boardrooms.

Covering the 10-month period to 31 December 2024, the report shares how Chapter Zero NZ continues to connect, equip and mobilise directors to make climate-smart decisions that create long-term value. It reflects on successes, identifies areas for growth, and shares insights into how climate is showing up, or not showing up, in New Zealand’s boardrooms.

Key milestones include:

  • A 37 per cent increase in Chapter Zero NZ supporters
  • Over 1,600 event attendees
  • Publication of four new bespoke resources on transition planning, remuneration, scenario analysis and lessons from early adopters
  • A successful inaugural Climate Forum bringing directors and experts together for a day of dialogue and learning

The report also introduces a refreshed impact model, designed with The Ākina Foundation, which provides a clearer framework for understanding Chapter Zero NZ’s influence at the director, board and organisational levels. This model will guide future activities and help us to tailor support to directors at different stages of their climate governance journey.

While momentum is building, the annual Director Sentiment Survey shows climate is slipping down the priority list for many boards. In 2024, only 1.3 per cent of directors identified climate change as the top organisational risk, and less than half say their boards have the skills needed to respond. The report calls for stronger leadership, better integration of climate into boardroom strategy, and ongoing collaboration across the governance ecosystem.

We extend our sincere thanks to all Steering Committee and Working Group members, foundation partners, supporters and collaborators who continue to champion climate governance across Aotearoa. In particular, we acknowledge the contribution of The Ākina Foundation, our official impact partner since day one. Their guidance in developing and refining our Impact Model has been instrumental in helping us strengthen our influence. As Ākina concludes its operations in 2025, we thank them for their partnership and legacy in shaping our impact journey.
