Chapter Zero NZ Breakfast | What comes after what comes next?

Overview

We are all experiencing whiplash as we try to keep on top of the implications of rapid, widescale geopolitical changes.

Global markets are reeling from economic and geopolitical shocks from inflation to supply chain disruptions, wars and political uncertainty. But the short- to medium-term upheaval doesn’t mean that long-term megatrends are no longer happening.

Despite the volatility of the moment, one megatrend remains constant: climate change. The climate crisis will outlast today’s political shifts and directors must navigate both short-term instability and long-term climate risks while positioning their businesses for success.

The climate crisis will still be there when the Trump Administration and the Russian invasion of Ukraine are in the history books. So how do directors deal both with short-term volatility, position the business for a climate-changed economy and society, and maintain shareholder value over the long-term?

Join Hon. James Shaw, former Minister for Climate Change, as he discusses the economic case for climate action and the role of directors in future-proofing their organisations. James will explore:

  • Why climate change is no longer a ‘future risk’ but a present-day economic disruptor, already reshaping financial markets and business strategy.
  • The cost of inaction vs. the returns on strategic climate investment – why forward-thinking boards are integrating climate risk into governance now.
  • How to balance immediate economic challenges with long-term sustainability, ensuring resilience and growth in an increasingly climate-conscious world.
